The Excellence in Concrete Awards program was established to recognize excellence in structural and architectural design as well as the unique, innovative and sustainable uses of concrete in Oregon & SW Washington construction projects. The awards program is sponsored by the Oregon Concrete & Aggregate Producers Association (OCAPA) and the Oregon Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (OACI).

The Oregon Concrete & Aggregate Producers Association & the Oregon Chapter of ACI will formally recognize your professional accomplishment at the 2010 Excellence in Concrete Awards Banquet. Project winners receive an attractive Excellence in Concrete Awards plaque which is presented to the engineer, contractor, architect, owner, concrete supplier, and concrete contractor for the project. Finalists are notified by invitation to attend the Excellence in Concrete Awards Banquet on May 14, 2010 at the Salem Convention Center in Salem, Oregon.

All projects submitted will receive recognition at the awards banquet; however, winners are held confidential until the night of the event. OCAPA recognizes award winners in it's quarterly newsletter, posts them on the OCAPA & Oregon ACI’s website, publishes winners in the Daily Journal of Commerce and sends press releases to local/national industry-related publications including the American Concrete Institute’s Concrete International magazine.

Eligibility
All projects must have been completed during the time period from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009. Projects constructed in phases are eligible for competition at the completion of each phase as well as the time of completion of the overall project. For example, if a project consists of multiple buildings, it could be submitted upon completion of the first building.

  • Projects can utilize any type of concrete construction technique including tilt-up, pre-cast, and cast-in-place.
  • Projects can be new construction, restoration, or repair.
  • The percentage of concrete used in the project is considered. As an example, a steel frame building may be acceptable provided a significant percentage of the project was built with concrete.

Important Tips for Submittals

Submitting Narratives
Please provide a narrative/photo narratives of approximately 300 words total describing your project (NOT 300 words for each photo narrative, 300 total). Label what portions of your narrative belong to what photos that you are providing. Your narrative should:

  • Tell a story about your project in a way that a lay-person would understand. (Save your technical data for the “Tech-Sheet”).
  • Leave out company names, trademarks, logos and brand names.
  • Explain unique design elements and challenges related to the project. Tell of complexities of the project relative to locations, placement constraints and expectations of project.
  • Effectively communicate the creativity of Structural and Architectural design elements using concrete to achieve aesthetic, structural or other engineering objectives.
  • Tell what makes the project special and why you are passionate about this particular project.
  • Explain concrete’s contribution to construction efficiency, construction speed, project economics, environmental sustainability or other considerations.
  • Make sure that the narrative matches with the corresponding photo that you provide.
Remember that the judges can only judge on the information that they are provided. Your narrative is the instrument that can make your project shine for the judges. Keep the narrative focused on the concrete construction aspects of the project and use descriptive words to highlight your project. Creativity and detail in your project narrative will translate into a better presentation to the judges.

Please take the time to preview some of our SAMPLE NARRATIVES:

Submitting Photos
Please submit 6 - 10 good quality photos. (Photos taken with your phone are generally not good quality). Photos need to be in a JPEG format (minimum resolution of 640x480). Other formats will NOT work.

Please make certain that photos match corresponding narratives. Please keep all pictures free of company logos, names, and date stamps.

Your entry is submitted to a panel of judges whose only opportunity to evaluate your project is through the pictures and narrative that you submit. Pictures of the project throughout the entire construction process are preferred. Include pictures that show difficult or unusual placement, unique forming or special finishes. For the entry to present well, it is crucial that full consideration be given to lighting and composition of your photographs. Sometimes a project will show better in an evening picture than one taken during the day. Remember to include at least one(1) picture of the completed project.

Technical Sheet
Please use this sheet to provide the judging panel with technical details about the project such as psi, number of yards of concrete used in the project, special mix designs, etc.
